A Family Centered Home

Ok- Let’s Back up

Now that we've explored what independent play is, let's take a step back and consider its role within the broader context of the family structure. Understanding the concept of a family-centered home is crucial, as it sets the foundation for nurturing independent play and creating a balanced environment where everyone's needs are met. For many of us who may find ourselves inadvertently existing in a child-centered home, knowledge of this structure can be incredibly helpful, liberating, and reassuring.

Welcome to a Family Centered Home

Imagine a home where everyone’s needs are met. Where parents and children alike include themselves on the list when making choices for the family. Imagine a home environment that teaches our children to be members of the larger community that they will one day join as adults.

What exactly is a family centered home?
A family-centered home prioritizes the needs and well-being of the entire family, creating an environment where both parents and children thrive. Unlike a child-centered home, which focuses primarily on catering to the child's every need and whim, a family-centered home balances the needs of both parents and children. This approach fosters independence in children while allowing parents to reclaim their time and energy, leading to a more harmonious and fulfilling family life and ultimately to a child who is well adapted to the idea of being a thriving member of the community.

Independent play is just one way we make a family centered home vs a child centered home our new normal. When engaged in solo play children are building their creativity and problem-solving skills while you enjoy some much-needed time to attend to your own needs or other needs of the family/community.
